Here's a question....a Joss project + Jeff? Cool, Not Cool? Joss is pretty particular about his stuff or so I've read. He doesn't allow for too much deviation so I suppose the question is, would one of his projects be too limiting for an actor like Jeff?
I don't think Joss is limiting to anyone. I'd love to see the two of them work together. Smart, funny, talented men both behind and in front of the camera? Sounds like a plan to me.
What I'd really love to see would be Jeff playing a role Joss wrote specifically for him. Joss has extraordinary vision when it comes to comic tragedy and complex duality. Spike was originally just a guest shot, but Joss connected with Marsters on a music level and look where the character went once Joss was writing it with Marsters, specifically, in mind as the actor for whom he was crafting his world.
And right now? Joss is doing a lot of writing with his lil bro Zack, who wrote for Deadwood and now writes for Fringe and who got his master's degree in TV at the knee of Milch. Were the Brothers Whedon put their heads together on something written specifically with Jeff in mind? Yeah. I could probably die happy then. What they'd come up with? Is anybody's guess. But the one thing you can be sure of is that it would kick some major ass. Can you imagine? Deadwood meets Firefly starring John Winchester with just a pinch of Eddie Blake made by Warner Brothers? To quote Jayne ... I'll be in my bunk.
Here's another question....what makes Joss go back to the same actors time and time again? Take Nathan Fillion for example.....Joss seems to love him...why? What does Joss look for in a actor?
I would imagine Joss goes back to the same company of actors for the same reason David Milch does: he trusts them with his work and knows their secret pockets of mad skilz. And he likes working with them ... their work ethic, their sense of humor, their level of dedication, their compatibility factor with other actors ... As a showrunner, you run into someone who consistently takes your work and gives you back something that blows you out of the water AND is great fun to work with? Pfffft. That's a no brainer. Grab 'em and hold onto 'em and write 'em good stuff to keep 'em.
Ok and how about this....Joss has recently signed on to direct the Avengers. He's gonna be working people like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johanssen, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth. This is kinda a big deal for Joss, no? I mean it jumps him into the major leagues so to speak....opinions?
Oh, don't let Joss's golly-gee-shucks demeanor fool you. He's already as major league as major league gets, particularly when it comes to genre. My guess would be that most of those names you reeled off are pretty fucking excited to be working with Joss ... and that it was a much bigger coup for The Avengers to land Joss than it was for Joss to land The Avengers. Although it does seem like a mutually win-win scenario, as long as Marvel lets Joss do it the way Joss wants to do it.
