Jeffrey Dean Morgan develops into action hero

Jeffrey Dean Morgan got out of bed with a vengeance. Five years ago, the actor shot to fame as Denny Duquette, the heartthrob heart patient on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” but after the character’s wedding and subsequent funeral, Morgan bounded onto the big screen as an action hero and never looked back.

Last year, Morgan turned in a dead-serious performance as the Comedian in Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen,” and in another turn at graphic novel adaptation, he now stars as Clay in director Sylvain White’s “The Losers,” based on the Andy Diggle/Jock comic. The story, about a discredited Special Forces team trying to prevent arch-nemesis Max from terrorizing a major American city required Morgan to be fight-tested and battle-worthy in knockout scenes with Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba.

“We spent a lot of time choreographing those fights,” Morgan said during a press day at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. “Invariably, they change on the day and it’s hard stuff. We didn’t have the luxury of spending a week doing a scene.

“The hotel scene we shot in a day and a half. The conclusion stuff with me and Idris we shot in a day and that fight got changed at the eleventh hour after we had choreographed something for two months in Puerto Rico and then we shot it in L.A., and it was a completely different fight than we had anticipated. So, that stuff was a big challenge. It’s hard getting up off the pavement 20 times and doing it again,” Morgan said, laughing.

“Jeffrey is trying to say that he was very scared to fight me,” Elba said, ribbing his co-star. “There was much trepidation.”

On the other hand, Morgan had no trouble filming love scenes for “The Losers” with Saldana. It should be noted that the following was said while seated next to the “Avatar” star, so good-natured joking, not piggishness, was the order of the day.

“I had a rough day that day. ‘I need another take!’” Morgan said, letting out a hearty laugh. “‘Just one more. Sylvain, c’mon! I don’t feel like she flipped her hair right on that one.’ Technically, the fight was much harder. Zoe and I, the whole cast, were very comfortable around each other from day one. So, the challenging part, that fight was a huge challenge for both of us, physically and in trying also to get the tone of what we needed to accomplish in that scene, which I think we did. Yeah, the love scene, man, bring that on! I had Zoe Saldana sitting on my lap naked. Yeah, rough!”

For her part, Saldana said it helped that Morgan made those scenes easier than some actors have in the past — not all her co-stars in past films have been gracious gentlemen on set.

“Been there — it’s not a good day at work,” Saldana said. “You’re the only one that’s naked and you have to act like you’re not aware you’re naked. Not only that, you have to flip your hair and have an orgasm. When you work with a good director and a good actor who makes it seem just like a regular Tuesday, then love scenes are like any other fight scene — they’re awesome.”

It took a long time for Morgan to become a “Loser.” His early career was spent in low-budget exploitation fare (“Uncaged,” “Undercover Heat”) and single-episode appearances on “Sliders” and “Walker, Texas Ranger.” But the Denny Duquette storyline on “Grey’s Anatomy,” in which Izzie (Katherine Heigl) falls in love with the doomed heart patient, made the then-40-year-old actor a choice selection for casting directors. Immediately after “Grey’s,” Morgan signed onto “P.S. I Love You” with Hilary Swank and went straight to work on “Watchmen.”

Later this year, he re-teams with Swank in the thriller “The Resident,” and takes the Powers Boothe role in the remake of “Red Dawn.” He said he’s grateful for the turn his career has taken, but then he looks at his “Losers” co-star’s box-office record and just laughs.

“I thought my year was coming until Zoe’s year came,” Morgan said, smiling at Saldana. “Now I’m just riding her coattails.”
